What Is Success?

Who do you consider to be a successful person?

The best definition of success I have heard is;

"A success is someone who is doing the job they want to be doing."

A garbage recycler is a success if that is what they want to be doing, but a rocket scientist is not a success if they would rather be a market gardener!

Studies have shown that about 75% of people are 'moderately dissatisfied' to 'very unfulfilled' with their work.

The Monday Morning Blues (M.M.B) symptoms - a long face, job dread and general crankiness - arise at about 8am on Monday morning, although in extreme cases, the Monday Morning Blues can strike on Sunday afternoon!

Recruitment consultants are great when you know which job you want and which industry you want to work in.
But if you aren't sure about what job you want, career coaching can help you align your values and life goals with the industry and career for which you are ideally suited.

Clients who seek career coaching fall into one of three general categories:
The 'Career Curious' - who are curious about a change in career and would like some options to consider and someone to act as a sounding board to talk things over with.
The 'Job Restless' - who are looking to change their job, often to a similar role in related industry.
Seeking a 'Career Calling' - these people want to discover their calling. They want their work to be their passion and to be "turned on" by what they do.
Our approach to coaching these groups is slightly different.
For the Career Curious we talk about what you like and don't like about your current and past jobs.
We do brainstorming and visioning.
For The Job Restless we use tools which reveal the skills you enjoy using and examine the interface between the jobs you would like to do and your personal strengths and skills.
For many clients who are bored or unchallenged, the answer may be to stay with their current employer but in a new or expanded role.
Because just as it can be extremely stressful to do a job which is too demanding and which you are not suited for, it can also be extremely stressful being in a job that does not stretch you at all and represents no challenge or potential for learning or growth.
For clients that are interested in discovering their Calling, we use holistic tools, which help bring the whole of their life into clearer focus and help them clarify what they really want to do with their life.
This way they will find work that fulfils their passion for meaningful work and engages both their heart and their head.
With all of these clients, we provide support and a sounding board for fresh ideas as you explore new options for your working life at a time and a pace that you decide on.

For example, if working in a large team is a core career value for you, then running your own business from home by yourself is probably not for you.
If you don't enjoy customer contact then selling cars will not suit you - but running your own vineyard may appeal?
Knowing your Career Values® saves you a great deal of time and hassle by eliminating jobs you will not be happy doing and zeroing in on the jobs that you are uniquely suited for!

How does it work?
The Discover Your Calling & Career® Program begins by compiling your career clues.
Your career clues are what skills you enjoy using, what you have enjoyed about current and past jobs, the environment and organisational culture you would like as well as what you don't want in a future job.
We put these clues together in your unique The Job Jigsaw® and the picture it makes is the sort of work you would be happiest doing!
This system can't fail because all the clues come from you - not from a computer telling you what to do or someone elses opinion about the job you should be doing.
You can get an idea of your career clues by asking yourself;
Positive and Negative Career Clues
What were the things you really enjoyed and what were the things that dragged you down about your current and past work?
Your Skillset
Make a complete list of all your skills, ask your friends if you like.
Which of these skills do you really enjoy utilizing, which ones are okay, and which skills do you not enjoy?
This is important information because you may be good at doing something, but you have burned out on it.
Work Environment
What kind of physical work environment do you need?
In an office, outdoors, on the road with travel, etc.?
Company Culture
What kind of organisational culture do you like?
High pressure, fast paced, having fun, collaborative, etc.
For example, do you work best within a team, or do you prefer working by yourself?
Fill Out Your Job Jigsaw®
Now you have compiled a list of your career clues, label them as Hot, Warm or Cold and write these on your The Job Jigsaw®
Hot clues are must haves that you can't live without - maybe something like a "Positive team."
Warm clues are things that would be nice - a company car for example?
Cold clues are things that you can't stand - something like repetitive work with no variety.
